Herbal MedicineUsing plants to treat illness - this is the oldest form of medicine known, and there is something inherently natural about it. There are many records of animals using plants to treat themselves when ill.It is possible that through some form of instinctual intelligence, animals are very aware of what plant to use, and when to use it. We are all familiar with using plants as food, in the form of fruit and vegetables, nourishing our bodies. Herbal medicine can be seen in a similar way, with specific plants being used to restore and nourish specific systems, or parts of the body that need attention. For example, Anthocyanodins found in Blueberries, have an action on the circulatiory system, restoring the walls of the arteries and veins. Other plants have a similar restorative action on the liver, the kidneys, the heart, the reproductive, respiratory and immune systems. Many herbs suit our bodies so perfectly it’s obvious we have evolved together over many millions of years - it’s as if the plants themselves are bursting to be given the opportunity to help us. Herbal medicine is very safe indeed: many of Herbs prescribed are often used as foods, like garlic used to clear infections.Onion is used to help with respiratory conditions. Lettuce contains a sap which is very relaxing, and herbalists use a type of wild lettuce for this action. Herbs may be prescribed in various forms: teas, capsules and tinctures, which are liquid preparations, or as creams and lotions. |
